How to appeal if you think your benefit is wrong
If you think the decision on your council tax or housing benefits is wrong
If you think that the decision is wrong you can do any of the following:
- Ask for a written statement of how your claim was assessed.
- Ask for an explanation about why the decision was made.
- Ask for the decision to be looked at again giving your reasons for making the request.
- Make a formal written appeal against the decision, which may result in an independent Tribunal hearing being held by the Appeals Service
You can make a formal appeal by writing a letter or by completing an appeal form that is available from the Benefits Section at the Civic Centre.
There is a time limit for querying the decision about your Housing or Council Tax Benefit.
If you wish to contact the Benefits Section to ask about a decision that has been made, you must do so within one calendar month of the date on your Benefit decision letter.
A booklet entitled, `If you think the decision about your Housing or Council Tax benefit is wrong', is available from the Benefits Section at the Civic Centre, which explains the steps listed above in more detail.
