North Kent Crime Prevention Panel

The Crime Prevention Panel exists with the intention of raising the awareness of the public to all aspects of crime prevention, advising members of the public in matters relating to the activities of the criminal fraternity and the legal means and methods that can be used to reduce the risk of them becoming a victim of crime. It is funded by local authorities, donations, businesses and its own efforts.

To this end the Panel members, who are all volunteers, will carry out house surveys of any domestic property. Where the occupiers feel they would benefit with reassurance or improvements in their security. Surveys can be requested by anyone but are usually initiated by Police, PCSOs, K.C.C. Community Wardens and Neighbourhood Watch.

The Panel has its own mobile exhibition centre (converted double decker bus) which is fitted with a wide range of commercially available security devices for doors and windows, household and personal entry alarms, vehicle security and a wide range of leaflets covering these and other items.

The bus also carries stocks of various personal protection security devices (personal attack alarms, shed alarms, marking pens etc.) for sale to the public. When the bus is at an event it is possible to undertake vehicle windows etching for which a donation is requested. All glass panels within a vehicle are marked (even sun roofs). This service cannot be carried out in wet weather.

The Panel also operates the Vehicle Watch Scheme and can supply the required window stickers. All items are sold at cost, or if sponsored, at discounted prices. The bus and staff are available to organizations and visits are arranged through the secretary.

When requesting the bus please note that it is big and heavy so access to sites and standing must be borne in mind. If in any doubt, the Panel can make a pre-site visit prior to confirming acceptance. In addition to the bus the Panel are able to present group discussions in halls or any other location which has an audience.
