Dunkirk Urban Community
At the heart of a community of more than 21,000 inhabitants, the Dunkirk Urban district covers eighteen municipalities on the Flanders Coast.
Due to their maritime history, the men and women of this area are very proud of their exchange-oriented traditions, and that they are open to the world and its economic, cultural or artistic connotations.
It is the third largest port in France and the capital of European energy (wind, petroleum, and nuclear). Dunkirk has associated major industrial development with an environmentally friendly and tourist-oriented policy.
Large international corporations have chosen Dunkirk for its
high performance equipment and infrastructure. As well as for its
quality of life, the professional know-how of his inhabitants and its
resources; its university, natural areas, beaches, golf course, traditions,
and cultural events.
The Dunkirk Urban district has set its objectives to
lead lasting, harmonious development to provide future
generations with a community renowned for its quality
of life and its economic and cultural dynamics.
The development of facilities has a direct influence on the quality of life for inhabitants. So the Dunkirk Urban District, with all its partners, has elaborated on a harmonious, socially responsible development policy that has lead to the elaboration of several program documents on the main development axes (development and urbanisation masterplan, land-use maps, commercial urbanisation charter and industrial environmental plan).
Numerous projects were designed to protect and develop green areas, and to re-qualify and re-energize certain urban zones that have been created. Several of these are exemplary.
The Dunkirk conurbation had the particularity of housing a large fallow port area, all this territory has been reclaimed, thanks to "Neptune's" vast development program. In parallel, the district has elected officials wishing to support the inner cities, the true heart of urban life.
The territorial projects are operations that will give balance to the city, create connections between neighbourhoods or municipalities and develop close inter-ward relations.
The Dunkirk urban district is developing its recreational and educational facilities: an animal park, a universe-planetarium, and a public golf course.
As well, it supports cultural life and major areas as the "Bateau Feu", the national stage, the Regional Contemporary Art Fund and the Harbour museum and its floating heritage.
To follow up these actions,
the Dunkirk urban district wishes to initiate education policies
and encourage the arts and sport by promoting community activities
for all citizens inspired by solidarity and social cohesion. The project
is to inspire "education and social cohesion through sport and culture
participation of the commitment for the community"
The Urban district also plays an active role in international
cooperation. It has led analysis of subjects such as
lasting development for port cities and steel industry
regions.
It is committed to history and development,
establishing partnerships with the municipalities of
Gaza in Palestine and Rama Hasharon in Israel.
Flanders Coast embraces its position as a citizen of
the world, prepared to meet other cities and ready to
receive those who wish to come and experience the quality
of life in the Dunkirk Urban area.
