International links
Dartford Borough Council has over many years enjoyed strong and valuable links with a number of partner towns and cities.
- "Education and Social Cohesion through Sport and Culture, A Cross-Border Exchange Network" Programme
It is committed to a positive international outlook and to maintaining a proactive approach to its international links. The council currently has links with the following:
- Hanau, Germany - Co-operation agreement 1969
- Capelle, Holland- Co-operation agreement 1989
- Gravelines, France - Town Twinning 1992
- Tallinn, Estonia - Co-operation Agreement 1992
- Urban Community of Dunkerque - Economic Accord 1985 (This original accord was with the town of Dunkerque)
There are a variety of benefits that can emanate from having international partners. The most common activity that takes place is the exchange of young people between the two towns - promoting tolerance of others and allowing young people to experience different cultures and ways of life, as well as contributing to curriculum development.
Local authorities can also act as facilitators of business development between the two countries. Additionally, some European Union funding can only be accessed when in partnership with a European partner - Dartford has worked with Dunkerque on such projects.
The Council has developed an international strategy that sets out in detail the international links the council has, why we have them and how we intend to take them forward in the future.
