Discounts
Council Tax is based on at least two adults living in a property as their main home. It is made up of 50% property element and 50% person element (based on 2 adults occupying).
If only one adult lives in the property, as their main home, the Council Tax will be reduced by 25%.
Where all the adult residents in your dwelling fall into one of the groups below, a 50% discount may apply:
- full time students, student nurses, apprentices and YT trainees;
- severely mentally impaired people;
- convicted and remand prisoners, except people in prison for non-payment of fines or the Council Tax;
- 18 or 19 year olds who are at, or have just left, school;
- patients with their permanent residence in hospital;
- patients in care homes;
- people kept in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983;
- care workers working on low pay usually for charities, such as Community Service Volunteers;
- people caring for someone with a disability who is not their spouse, partner or child under 18;
- residents of certain hostels or night shelters (like the Salvation Army);
- Members of international headquarters, defence organisations and visiting forces;
- monks and nuns
If you own a second property that is not occupied as anyone's main residence but you keep it furnished ready for your own use or for letting to tenants then the Council Tax will be reduced by 10%.
If you own a property that has been unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for more than six months then 100% of the full Council tax will be due.
