Renewable Energy Seminar 2008
Dartford Borough Council held 2 seminars on Saturday 8 March 08 for residents to find out more about sustainable energy resources.
The seminars, organised by the council with the National Energy Foundation explored a range of renewable energy options in detail including solar water, wind turbines and ground source heat pumps. Advice was given on costs, installation and planning requirements and also looked at the most efficient solutions to suit different properties and budgets.
Below are the presentations provided during the seminars:
At the Renewable Energy Seminar held in March some people expressed an interest at keeping in touch with each other to exchange ideas regarding renewable energy issues. These people provided e.mail addresses.
Renewabledartford Yahoo Group was set up as a result, and is not moderated or managed in any way by Dartford Borough Council. To join this group follow this link www.Groups.yahoo.com under find a group type renewabledartford.
Renewable Energy
Coal, Oil and Gas are called ‘fossil fuels’ because they have been formed from the fossilised remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
At the present time, they provide around 66% of the world’s electrical power and 95% of the world’s total energy demands (including heating, transport, electricity generation and other uses.
Fossil Fuels are not a renewable energy resource. Once we’ve burned them all, there isn’t any more and our consumption of fossil fuels has nearly doubled every 20 years since 1900.
Renewable energy refers to power generated by a renewable source. When the energy is generated, the resource is not depleted or used up.
They are naturally replenished and can either be managed so that they last forever, or their supply is so enormous humans can never meaningfully deplete them. Unlike fossil fuels, most renewable energy sources do not release carbon dioxide and other pollutants as by products into the atmosphere.
As the amount of fossil fuel resources on Earth decreases, it is becoming increasingly important to find and utilise alternative fuels.
Examples of renewable resources include:
- Wind power
- Solar power
- Bio fuels
- Hydro electric power (HEP)
- Geothermal energy
- Tidal power
- Wave energy
