Dartford Creek Project

Dartford Creek runs through the Northern Gateway of Dartford and is integral to the future development of this area. The physical environment is predominantly large commercial/light industrial buildings with a neglected public realm and limited public access along the creekside. It is currently underused by the local community and is in a very poor condition. At present the Creek is tidal and at low tide, much of the muddy bed of the Creek is exposed. This is particularly pronounced where there is little vegetation at the fringes of the Creek and where the Creek is edged with unattractive river walls. This together with the lack of maintenance of a number of structures including the lock, along the Creek creates an impression of neglect, which is compounded by the accumulation of rubbish and debris

A steering group (comprising South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Dartford Borough Council (DBC), Kent Thameside Delivery Board (KTDB) and the Environment Agency (EA)) commissioned a study by Halcrow Consulting which led to the identification of a preferred option to improve Dartford Creek which is supported by the Environment Agency. The proposed works are intended to enhance the visual, recreational, leisure and ecological value of the Creek and encourage redevelopment of the Northern Gateway of Dartford.

The works that are included within this project include footpath improvement works along the north side of the river, tree removal and planting, improvements to the river revetments along the river banks and various items of planting within the river. There are proposed improvements to a section of wet woodland to the north of the creek together with improved pedestrian access to the woodland. There is a section of sheet piling provided to create a section of replacement river flood wall together with the provision of a cantilever walkway extending over the river to form part of the riverside footpath.

The attached drawings, as produced by Halcrow Consultants, show the various items of improvement works that are proposed for Dartford Creek.
