121 Youth Befriending

121 Youth Befriending is a Charity that operates across most of North West Kent, providing help and support to young people aged between 6 and 16 years old in crisis. Sometimes the families of the young people are unable to support them due to a variety of circumstances and difficulties.

Many of the children referred to 121 are seen as a problem, starting on a downward spiral leading to all sorts of problems such as school exclusion, disruptive and anti-social behaviour and possibly crime. Volunteers can turn this around by providing the young person with a positive role model, giving space, time and support to help the young person cope with the demands they face. The 121 volunteers empower the young person to take control of some of the difficulties they face and cope with them and go forward.

121 Youth Befriending in Dartford has been held up as a shining example for its work with volunteers from disadvantaged backgrounds and has been included in a guide to help voluntary organisations across the country work successfully with volunteers from socially excluded backgrounds, including people with no qualifications, people from BME groups and those with disabilities or long term illnesses.

WalkTall

Set in a performing arts framework Walk Tall works with young people to explore reasons for anti-social behaviour and the ways that people communicate and learn how to convey effective but non-aggressive messages. The young people learn skills and strategies to deal with and/or manage aggression bullying and to appreciate the benefits of co-operative non-violent behaviour and adopt it as the most effective way of relating to others. Walk Tall also helps young people to develop self-esteem; self-confidence and respect for themselves.

All of these issues are expressed through drama, music and movement either over a term or workshops during which the young people devise dialogues, songs and dances which are worked up into a performance. Walk Tall’s approach gives valuable practice of effectively managing difficult situations in a safe and controlled environment.

Walk Tall also offers a service for vulnerable adults, for example, those who have a physical disability or those who may need to re-build their lives after trauma. Adult learning is practical and includes processes, which can be instantly applied to life to start the process of change and development.
