Homegrown sports winners celebrate success
Dartford’s sports stars of the future attended a glamorous ceremony on Wednesday 26 March to reward their hard work and dedication. Youngsters who train across the borough were recognised for a wide range of sports including rugby, trampolining and judo.
The Sports Awards 2008, presented by BBC Radio Kent sports reporter Matt Davison, took place at Princes Park Community Stadium. Each winner received a stylish trophy on the night as well as £100 to help fund travel, competitions, clothing or equipment costs.
Cllr Patsy Thurlow, portfolio holder for sport says the talent for the awards was exceptionally high.
“The evening was a perfect opportunity to give our talented sports stars the recognition they deserve. It is wonderful to see so many dedicated and gifted individuals nominated as we have had a great year for sport in Dartford including the opening of the skate park, the Tour de France and hosting the British leg of the World Strongman Cup.”
Members of Fleetdown United FC were presented with the Leader’s Award for community sport, prompting a double celebration for the club who were awarded a £2000 council grant in February.
The awards, organised by Dartford Borough Council, were sponsored by a range of local businesses and organisations including Bonsure Insurance Brokers, Parkwood Leisure, Adecco, Thomson Snell & Passmore and Bergman Osterberg.
