Grey wheeliebin

wheelie bins for Recycling

Dartford residents have a second 240 litre wheeled bin (grey colour) for the 'dry recyclables'. The black box takes glass bottles/ jars for recycling. Please do not use black sacks for recycling.

We collect the recycling bin fortnightly. Clean recyclable material which includes paper, plastic and cans, does not pose a risk to health and should not attract animals such as rats.

We will still be collecting your general waste (including food waste) weekly, but the cost of also collecting recycling waste every week would mean double the cost to Council Tax payers and lead to twice as many collection lorries in our streets each week.

Flats

The Council is keen to increase the opportunities for residents of flats to recycle and Cabinet have also approved a range of measures to achieve this.

Blocks of flats (public & private sector) range from the small “two up, two down” to five storey blocks of over 50 dwellings; each site must be dealt with individually.

At some of the smaller blocks, residents have their own wheeled bins, whilst many blocks have communal bin areas.

If there is space for additional bins for recycling these will be put in place with appropriate signing; other bin stores will need adaptation. In general we are trying to phase out clear sacks, currently delivered to many residents of flats, and where possible reusable canvas recycling bags will be issued. Please do not use black sacks for recycling.

These measures for flats will be put in place, in consultation with residents, over the coming months.

Assisted collections

If you are elderly, infirm or disabled, the Council may be able to help you with the collection of your refuse and recycling.

Garden waste recycling and composting

Residents may no longer put garden waste into their green wheeled bin. Residents are advised to try one of these alternatives instead:

Commercial waste recycling

The Council does not operate a service for recycling waste from commercial premises such as shops, offices or businesses.

Freegle

Freegle’s sole objective is to enable individuals to ‘do their bit’ by keeping household goods out of landfill by giving away things they don’t want, to people who can use them. This is a truly grassroots co-operative run by and for local people.

Freegle is hosted by the free service Yahoo! Groups, and is available at www.iloveFreegle.org

Help the Aged recycling

Your discarded goods can raise funds to help vulnerable older people.

Every year, over 28 million tonnes of rubbish is created by households in the UK. By recycling your unwanted goods with Help the Aged, you can help raise vital funds for our work with disadvantaged older people. More information about "Help the Aged Recycling".
