When we make a decision about your Housing Benefit we will send you a letter explaining how we have reached that decision. You should check this letter carefully. If you disagree with our decision you can ask us to:

  • Explain our decision
  • Look at our decision again (this is called a reconsideration)
  • Pass your case to the independent tribunal (this is called an appeal)

You can ask us to explain our decision at any time. If you want us to look at a decision again or if you want to appeal against a decision you must write to us within one month of the date of the decision letter. Your letter must give full reasons why you think our decision is wrong. Late appeals may still be considered if there are special circumstances that caused the delay such as a death or serious illness.
