We're here to help with food emergencies
Dartford Borough Council Leader Jeremy Kite explains how 'Dartford Together' can help with food supplies for those facing a food emergency.
If you think that you, or someone you know, needs help, call DBC (8:45-5:15pm Monday-Thursday or 8:45-4:45pm on Friday) on 01322 343244.
Our partners "Kent Together" provide a 24 hour service, and are also available over the weekend, call them on 0300 041 9292.
"From the moment the Coronavirus arrived everyone at Dartford Borough Council has focussed on two main objectives.
First, we have tried to keep our core services running as normally as possible. That’s important because the council has a huge role to play in supporting the whole community during this outbreak and helping it recover when life starts to return to normal.
Second, we have been particularly focussed on the most vulnerable in our community - those identified by the NHS as being in particular need of shielding from this awful virus.
It’s taken a lot of work but we think that we’ve got a good handle on these two objectives. Dozens of food packages are now dispatched regularly to Dartford’s most vulnerable folk from our distribution hub in the town centre; and by equipping more of our own staff to work from home we continue to help residents every day.
Now, we want to expand our help to those in our community who may not be on the list of folk deemed to be most vulnerable but who nevertheless are fearful of facing a real ‘food emergency’.
By ‘food emergency’, we mean anyone who is anxious that they may not have enough food or supplies for themselves or those in their household and who have NO OTHER means of getting what they need. That last bit is important. Some wonderful work is being done by friends, neighbours, food banks and businesses all over Dartford to support people within their own community and we’re truly grateful for the thousands of acts of kindness being carried out every day. Please don’t stop. These amazing local initiatives are allowing us to focus on those folk who would otherwise find themselves without such help.
To help build the capacity of social food providers DBC has made substantial grants to two of the town’s longest established and most experienced food banks. Helping our townsfolk is all about partnership and we are proud to be supporting each other.
If you, or someone you know, are facing a food emergency then please call us. Don’t be embarrassed or reluctant. Nothing is more important than your health and wellbeing. If we can help, or point you in the direction of someone who can, we will.
Together, we want to reach everyone who needs support."
