Situated next to the QEII Bridge and close to the River Thames, The Bridge is the first of the major regeneration projects underway in the Thames Gateway.
Developed by ProLogis Developments Limited and Dartford Borough Council, The Bridge is transforming a 264-acre brownfield site into a dynamic new community for the information age.
The Bridge integrates 1.8 million sq ft of office, science park and industrial space with 1,500 new homes and facilities such as a local shopping centre, a hotel along and a Learning & Community Campus. The entire development is set within 80 acres of open space while the different areas are linked by footpaths, cycle ways and the award-winning Fastrack public transport system.
Balancing the needs of commercial occupiers and residents with a thoughtful approach to the natural environment, The Bridge meets many of the Government's criteria for sustainable communities and was selected as the site for the Kent campus of the Institute for Sustainability and SusCon.
Institute for Sustainability and SusCon
The Institute is a world-class centre of excellence for independent sustainability research and the dissemination of knowledge. Bringing together leading experts from academia and business, it aims to develop practical and affordable technologies, systems and services that can be readily implemented in the Thames Gateway.
North Kent College / SusCon, a pioneering sustainable construction training and demonstration centre, is co-located with the Institute at The Bridge. Focusing on the application of new environmental technologies within the built environment, SusCon aims to equip all levels of the construction industry with the knowledge and skills that will make sustainable living possible.
As Europe's largest regeneration area, the Thames Gateway provides the Institute with an extensive test-bed for research activity and a ready market for SusCon graduates to implement the solutions that the Institute is helping to develop.
Encouraging an Entrepreneurial Culture
The Institute for Sustainability and SusCon are initially based at the Nucleus innovation centre, which provides business space along with a wide range of commercial support services. Offering access to funding, masterclasses and facilities such as an ILab to stimulate creative thinking, the Nucleus has established an environment where growing businesses have every opportunity for success. Expanding beyond the Nucleus, these businesses can move their operations into specialised science and technology space, or - if more appropriate - to the office park. Wherever a company is in its growth cycle, it will find the right facilities at The Bridge.
The Nucleus Business and Innovation Centre
The Nucleus business and innovation centre has been built at the heart of The Bridge, a major new centre for knowledge-based industries providing over 1 million sq ft of office, science and technology space in the Thames Gateway.
The Nucleus provides a contemporary working environment in an environmentally sustainable building with flexible, cost-effective space equipped with the very latest technology. The Centre encourages new enterprises and offers services and advice to everyone based at The Bridge, and to the wider business community.
Designed in contemporary styles, the 1,500 new homes will be built in districts with their own distinct characters and some will include live/work facilities to encourage budding entrepreneurs.
Available on a range of different tenures, each home will be fully equipped for modern living with broadband connections and real-time access to Fastrack travel information.
