Big Bin Vote 3

Your service, Your decision.

We’ve got a great record of putting your views FIRST when it comes to bin collections. Before we sign a new waste contract for 2019 we’d like to hear from you again.

If you wish to skip straight to the vote, the link is at the bottom of this page.

Unlike some councils, it’s always been our view that local residents should have the last word on how we collect household waste and recyclying..

Council bin collections have become quite a controversial issue in recent years with lots of councils under pressure from government ( and even the EU ) to meet one target or another.  As a result, some councils now collect residual waste only ONCE A MONTH!

That’s not our way. Dartford Borough Council believes that YOU pay for the service so YOU should tell us how you want it delivered.

Dartford’s waste contract is up for renewal in 2019 and we’ve already started thinking about what the new service might look like. Before we make any decisions we’re seeking your views again.

We’re asking you to consider three options.

1.BASIC ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTION
2.PREMIUM ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTION
3.FORTNIGHTLY RECYCLING, WEEKLY RESIDUAL ( the current system)

You’ll notice straightaway that we HAVE NOT asked you to consider moving to THREE WEEKLY or MONTHLY residual bin collections as some councils have done. That’s because we believe it would be a poor solution for Dartford and wouldn’t provide a good service to you.

We have also rejected an extra round to collect both RESIDUAL AND RECYCLING waste EVERY WEEK.  That’s  because the issues we face relate to the BALANCE between different types of waste we collect rather than the TOTAL VOLUME.  Introducing an additional collection round would send your Council Tax soaring.

To help you get to grips with the 3 options, here’s a profile of each of them in turn.

BASIC ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTION means…

NO SPECIFIC SERVICE for FOOD WASTE
RECYCLING collected FORTNIGHTLY
GLASS collected FORTNIGHTLY
GARDEN WASTE collected IF you SUBSCRIBE to our service
BULKY ITEMS collected BY ARRANGEMENT for a charge
RESIDUAL WASTE collected FORTNIGHTLY

A huge number of councils now offer an Alternate Weekly Collection to millions of residents and it clearly works very well for them.  Some households might find they  need to make small improvements to their recycling efforts but that’s no bad thing.  For most people who find their bins are not full on collection day a fortnightly residual collection is likely to be more than enough.

You might wonder why we would consult you about a BASIC alternate weekly collection service when an enhanced service is possible.

Well, the answer is that is that this service generates substantial cost savings that could be diverted into other linked services that you might find attractive.  Savings could, for example, be used to make the collection of Bulky Items substantially cheaper or increase litter picking in your neighbourhood.

PREMIUM ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTION means…

FOOD WASTE collected WEEKLY
RECYCLING collected FORTNIGHTLY
GLASS collected FORTNIGHTLY
GARDEN WASTE collected IF you SUBSCRIBE to our service
BULKY ITEMS collected BY ARRANGEMENT for a charge
RESIDUAL WASTE collected FORTNIGHTLY

Adding a WEEKLY collection of food and rotting waste to a regular Alternate Weekly Collection has become very popular with lots of councils and residents - mainly because it deals with the problem of the smelliest part of your rubbish hanging around households for up to a fortnight.

The big advantage of this premium system is that it is likely to result in a dramatic improvement to recycling rates whilst still ensuring that we visit your house weekly to take away food and other rotting waste. It also generates some savings that could help make things like collections of Bulky Waste a little cheaper or provide additional waste services to you.

It does mean an extra bin but this one’s a small indoor/outdoor one known as a caddy. It’s hygienic and designed to sit in your kitchen or utility room before being put out EVERY WEEK on collection day.

FORTNIGHTLY RECYCLING, WEEKLY RESIDUAL means …

NO SPECIFIC SERVICE for FOOD WASTE
RECYCLING collected FORTNIGHTLY
GLASS collected FORTNIGHTLY
GARDEN WASTE collected IF you SUBSCRIBE to our service
BULKY ITEMS collected BY ARRANGEMENT for a charge
RESIDUAL WASTE collected WEEKLY

The big advantage of Dartford’s current system is that food and rotting waste doesn’t hang around in your bins for more than a week ( although as we have explained above that’s also true of the PREMIUM ALTERNATE WEEKLY COLLECTION )

The big drawback is that a weekly residual collection means recycling rates are always likely to be low because it doesn’t offer much encouragement to households who don’t bother recycling at all.   That’s frustrating for an increasing number of families who do recycle and often find their residual bin is half empty on collection day.

Dartford Council manages to offset our low recycling rates by diverting waste away from landfill  ( landfill is expensive and particularly damaging to the environment) and using it to generate energy. In fact, we send less than 1% of waste to landfill which is one of the lowest rates in the country.  Even so, recycling more would be a great thing to do.

HAS THE COUNCIL ALREADY MADE A DECISION?

No. We want to hear from you first. Dartford residents have twice voted to retain weekly residual collections but since then there’s been major improvements of some of the alternative arrangements - particularly the premium version of Alternate Weekly Collections.  This system is now very popular up and down the country and it serves millions of residents very well.

Our current system works well for many people but it does result in lower recycling rates.  The addition of a weekly food waste caddy to an Alternative Weekly Collection makes it much more of a customer-friendly choice than many other services.  It would mean we continue to visit your home EVERY WEEK but also has big advantages for recycling too.

So, there are advantages and disadvantages to each solution and there’s nobody better placed to help us make the decision than local people. That’s what the Big Bin Vote is all about.
