Dartford Borough Council invites you to get involved with the 75th anniversary of VE Day

Dartford Borough Council is urging all local residents to commemorate the Allied Victory in Europe and give thanks to the Second World War generation and the sacrifices they made securing peace across the continent.

Friday 8 May 2020 has been designated by the Government as a VE Day Bank Holiday, and communities across Dartford are being encouraged to get involved in a range of online and home-based activities this weekend.  Dartford Council had a range of events and celebrations planned including a special bandstand concert, a commemorative gift for young people and had even arranged for a full sized Spitfire to be displayed in Central Park. However, in line with the latest expert medical advice and guidance on mass gatherings, the Council has had to suspend events but that’s not stopping it from paying tribute to the Second World War generation, and the Council Leader is encouraging everyone in Dartford to do this from the safety their own homes.

The Council will be promoting different ways to take part and stay safe on Dartford Together
including:

  • Joining the nation’s toast to the heroes of WW2 at 3pm on Friday 8 May
  • How to make bunting to hang both inside and outside your home
  • Colouring posters for kids and your windows
  • Commemorate by having a special meal indoors including how to cook wartime recipes
  • Posters to print and personalise, graphics to share on social media

Leader of the Council, Jeremy Kite, said: “While we know that this year's celebrations won't be the same, that doesn’t stop us honouring heroes of the past and giving thanks for the heroes of today. Dartford is a proud town and we’re sure people will enjoy decorating their homes red, white and blue. We are sharing some fun and creative ways to pay tribute to those who lived through the war and would love communities to share Second World War stories, family histories, messages of remembrance and VE Day home activities on Dartford Together.
