DBC Supports International Fraud Awareness Week

The campaign runs throughout this week (15-21 November) and is an opportunity to come together to look at how far reaching the effects of fraud can be and report those responsible for abusing the system.
Every year across the country, billions of taxpayers’ money is lost due to fraud. The National Fraud Office suggests that the full extent of public sector losses is unknown, since much fraud is hidden, difficult to find or remains unreported.
Types of fraud committed against local authorities include Council Tax fraud when a person deliberately gives incorrect information to pay less or no Council Tax, social care fraud to obtain funding or assistance they are not entitled to, blue badge fraud and insurance fraud when false claims are made against the Council.
Public money lost to fraud is money that could be used to improve communities and vital services. The Council’s Counter Fraud Teams are operating business as usual and are available to help. They will listen to any concerns and can also provide advice and guidance.
