Celebrating the power of towns

How the competition works

Stage One: Expression of Interest (EOI)

Towns submit an initial proposal outlining:

  • Their cultural heritage and identity
  • Their vision for the future
  • Evidence of local support
  • Strength of partnerships

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 31 March.

Stage Two: Shortlisting

An independent expert panel reviews submissions and selects a shortlist of towns to move forward.

Stage Three: Full Bid Development

Shortlisted towns are invited to develop a detailed programme and delivery plan before a final decision is made.

This means that the current stage is about demonstrating ambition, credibility and community backing — not submitting a fully costed events programme.

Why It Matters

The UK Town of Culture title brings national recognition and significant profile.

It can help towns:

  • Attract visitors and investment
  • Strengthen local pride
  • Grow creative opportunities
  • Build lasting cultural infrastructure
  • Position themselves confidently on the national stage

For Dartford, it is an opportunity to tell our story properly — and to build on the cultural foundations already in place.
