Westgate information

Dartford Borough Council has bought the Westgate site on behalf of the public

The consultation for this development has now closed, but if you'd like to learn more about our proposal, please read on.

Developers and investors have come and gone, but it seems to me their plans often asked the wrong questions:

  • How many flats can we fit in?
  • Can we build it cheaper?
  • How high can we go?

Dartford deserves better.

That's why we've purchased the site from Homes England (the government’s housing and regeneration agency), giving us much more freedom to shape something that works for Dartford – not just for profit.

Quality over quantity

The government still has some conditions. The site must include housing, but now we can focus on quality over quantity – asking questions about community, design and long-term value, rather than how many units we can fit.

We want to build something that has a lasting positive impact on the town.

What are we proposing?

  • A mixture of housing, shops and businesses
  • No high rises.
  • Homes for people of all ages - with priority given to Dartford buyers
  • The right shops for the town centre
  • The best use of the old Co-op building
  • Keeping the car park - and improving how it works.
