- Fireman and Trimmer Ronald Day, SS Manchester Merchant, Merchant Navy. Lived at 2 St George’s Cottages, Whitehill, Longfield. Died 25.2.43, aged 19, when SS Manchester Merchant was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off Newfoundland. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial and on the Longfield War Memorial.
