- Lieutenant William Ward Deighton, HMS Belmont, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Attended Dartford Grammar School 1917-23. Died 31.1.42, aged 33, when HMS Belmont was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off Newfoundland while on convoy escort duty. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial and on the Dartford Grammar School In Memoriam Panel.
