- Mate John Stanley Fryer, SS Empire Wold, Merchant Navy. Lived at 13 Ames Road, Swanscombe. Died 10.11.44, aged 24, when the tug SS Empire Wold sunk in high seas off Iceland while assisting two ships which had been torpedoed. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial and on the Roll of Honour at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Swanscombe.
