- Leading Telegraphist Edward William Landers, HM Submarine Oxley, Royal Navy. He had grown up in Swanscombe and his parents still lived at 14 Stanley Road. Died 10.9.1939, aged 23, when HM Submarine Oxley was mistaken for a German U-boat and torpedoed by HM Submarine Triton off Norway, becoming the first British submarine to be sunk in the Second World War. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the Roll of Honour at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Swanscombe.
