- Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class Douglas John Macpherson, HMS Boadicea, Royal Navy. Lived in Bexley with his wife but he had grown up in Hawley and his parents still lived at 3 Royal Road. Died 10.6.40, aged 30, presumably when German dive bombers attacked HMS Boadicea while she was evacuating troops from Le Havre. Buried in Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, Gosport, Hampshire, and commemorated on the Sutton-at-Hone War Memorial. Brother-in-law of Albert Joseph Caldwell who died 6.10.39.
