- Chief Engine Room Artificer Albert Joseph Caldwell, HMS Wivern, Royal Navy. Listed on the Sutton-at-Hone War Memorial but possibly only since his wife came from Hawley (when she was nine her family lived at Harmer’s Cottages, Royal Road, but she had later moved to his home city of Portsmouth). Died 6.10.39, aged 29, lost overboard. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial and on the Sutton-at-Hone War Memorial. Brother-in-law of Douglas John Macpherson who died 10.6.40.
