- Stoker 2nd Class Alfred Rayfield, HMS Grasshopper, Royal Navy. Lived at Stocks Bungalow/The Stocks, Longfield Hill. Died 14.2.42, aged 33, when the river gunboat HMS Grasshopper was sunk by Japanese bombers while evacuating troops and women from Singapore to Batavia. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the Longfield War Memorial. Brother of George Charles Rayfield who died 21.7.45.
