- Able Seaman William Harold Roberts, HMS Duchess, Royal Navy. He had grown up in Dartford and his parents still lived at 46 Lawson Villas. Died 12.12.39, aged 20, when HMS Duchess was accidentally rammed by the battleship HMS Barham in thick fog off the Mull of Kintyre. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
