- Captain Jack Cameron Short, 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps. His parents and his wife lived in Welling but he had attended Dartford Grammar School 1929-35. Died 30.9.43, aged 25, shot by German guards while attempting to escape from a former Italian Prisoner of War camp near Sulmona, Central Italy. Buried in Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, Italy, and commemorated on the Welling War Memorial and on the Dartford Grammar School In Memoriam Panel.
