Introduction
Flight Sergeant (Air Gunner) Charles Louis Carpenter, 57 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He had grown up in Sutton-at-Hone and his parents still lived at 18 St John’s Terrace. Died 8.7.44, aged 22, when his Lancaster bomber was shot down during a raid on V1 flying bomb stores at St Leu d’Esserent. Buried in St Maclou-de-Folleville Churchyard, France, and commemorated on the Sutton-at-Hone War Memorial.
