Waste carriers fined

A joint operation between Dartford Borough Council and Kent Police has seen two illegal waste carriers fined.

Armando Grecu and Valerica Cismaru were both caught driving vehicles loaded with scrap metal in two separate incidents earlier this year.

Grecu, 26, from Ilford, was stopped outside shops in Mead Road, Dartford on May 14 during Op Assist. Last Friday (November 21) he was convicted of operating without a waste carriers licence and ordered to pay a total of £1,121, comprising of a £300 fine, a £120 victim surcharge and £701 in costs.

Cismaru, 52, from Erith, was stopped in Barfield, Sutton at Hone on February 12 during a previous deployment of Op Assist. He was convicted last Friday at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court and fined £420 for failing to have a  waste carriers licence.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said: “If someone takes your scrap for disposal, it’s vital that you check for a waste carriers licence, so that you know it will be disposed of properly. A simple check can protect the environment and support legitimate, fully licensed local businesses.

“Op Assist continues to be a successful partnership between Dartford Borough Council and Kent Police and I look forward to seeing more results like this in the future.”

Police Sergeant Molly Irwin from Kent Police said: “Targeting illegal waste carriers is essential to preventing fly-tipping and safeguarding our environment. These activities not only damage our countryside but also undermine legitimate businesses and harm local communities.

“By taking action against offenders, we are reinforcing the message that environmental crime will not be tolerated.

Men fined for spitting in Dartford town centre

Two men have been fined a combined total of nearly £800 for spitting in Dartford town centre.

Chez Sulivano, 26, from Camden, and Connor Murphy, from Plumstead, were both fined £390 each at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court on Friday, November 28. Both men had failed to pay a £100 fixed penalty notice for littering and their cases were sent up to magistrates.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said: “Littering isn’t just cigarette butts and food wrappers.

“There’s absolutely no reason to spit in the middle of the street, at the very least it’s disgusting, and some may even find it intimidating.

“I hope this sends a clear message on how serious we are about keeping our streets clean.”

Fire and damage at playground

We are appealing for help following two recent anti-social incidents at Attlee Drive playground.

Altogether the damage to two separate pieces of equipment will cost us nearly £7000 to replace.

Dog bite

We have noticed damage to a swing in the playground caused by a dog repeatedly chewing on the seat.

The seat is now out of use and we will be replacing it. Residents are reminded that dogs are not allowed inside playgrounds. If you saw an owner letting their dog do this on week commencing November 17, please let us know.

Fire

Someone has decided to set fire to the rope swing in Attlee Drive playground so that now no one can enjoy it. We are in the process of replacing it.

In the meantime, we’re asking anyone who saw anything suspicious on the night of Thursday, November 13 please let us know.

Fly-tipping on East Hill

Household furniture was dumped over flower beds off East Hill over the weekend of April 5.

Not only is fly-tipping selfish and illegal, it also harms the environment.

The beds opposite Darenth Road were recently planted to boost biodiversity in the town centre.

Fortunately we’ve been able to clear up the waste quickly, and we’re determined to catch those who think it’s okay to leave a mess around our town.

Name and shame, broken play equipment

Vandalism: Cedar Road

Persons unknown have attempted to remove a metal pole attached to the main climbing frame using what can only have been something like a crowbar. While they didn’t manage to remove the pole, it has been bent so out of shape that we have had to remove it.

Fortunately the playground can remain open, but that doesn’t make this behaviour any more acceptable. If you’ve noticed vandalism or anti-social behaviour around Cedar Road playground. Please let us know.

Dumped trailer: Bobb Dunn Way

Someone ‘lost’ their trailer on Bob Dunn Way overnight on Tuesday, April 22.

The trailer dangerously blocking traffic for drivers on the Wednesday morning commute. We’re removing it, but would love to speak to whoever thought it was safe to dump a trailer on a busy road.

If you saw anything, or have any dashcam footage, please let us know.
