What projects can CIL fund?
Infrastructure includes roads and other transport facilities, flood defences, schools and other educational facilities, medical facilities, sporting and recreational facilities, and open spaces, for example. Where funded by neighbourhood CIL, smaller scale local improvement projects may be appropriate where addressing the ‘demands that development places on an area’ (including the associated needs arising from a growing/ changing population).
See below for a range of project examples.
- Projects and activities resulting in improved community services, including improved facilities or environment for local community ventures, or major expansion of the internal capabilities of voluntary groups and charities.
- Improvements to library, public skills and community learning.
- Improvements to non-commercial indoor and/or outdoor play spaces, provision or improvement of sports pitches or other recreational areas and improvements to non-commercial local sports club facilities.
- Improvements to the provision of local arts and cultural activities, provision of new art in the community works or the refurbishment of existing public art works.
- Improvements to public space used by local communities and residents, improvements to the accessibility and setting of local heritage sites and buildings of historic/local interest.
- Improvements shown to achieve more secure streets and spaces, or community safety.
- Measures that improve local air quality, including provision for increased walking and cycling, and provision of electric vehicle charging points for general public use (where no other service provider has committed to providing them in the local area), or deliver improvements that tackle local impacts or causes of climate change
- Improved local green spaces, river and waterbody and wildlife habitats, improvements to local parks, public gardens and allotments, bringing back redundant land or underused routes into use as public space/access or improved biodiversity.
Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and the examples must firstly fulfill eligibility critiera.
Some projects may be more suitable for strategic CIL funding, rather than neighbourhood/unparished funding.
